A TREE IS A TREE IS A TREE
“With the people rushing past, the metro, the traffic and the stone houses still in my head, I enter the studio in Paris and there they are: the Power Trees by Maria Dubin. Mighty vertical tree trunks that cast a spell over me with their individual dance. A tour de force of vibrant colour and pattern energy.”

PARADISE EXPANDED – PRETORIA, 2025
In February, I spent ten days in Pretoria, immersed in drawing my dear friend Camilla’s lush garden, the trees that line her street, and the foliage of Pretoria University’s campus. These pencil sketches captured the essence of a place alive with warmth and movement.
I then brought the drawings back to my studio in Copenhagen, where an entirely different reality awaited. The stark Danish winter outside my window stood in contrast to the vibrant energy of South Africa. In this shift, the works transformed—black and white pencil sketches evolved into expressive oil pastels, holding on to the Sun of South Africa embracing both countries in an almost abstract, hybrid language.
These nine works mark the beginning of the Paradise Expanded series. As spring slowly unfolds in Denmark, I continue working on new pastels, allowing the changing seasons to further shape the series.
